Protect the Right to Vote

There is nothing more fundamental in a democracy than a right to vote. At this moment, that right – and our democracy itself – is under attack.

In 2021 alone, 19 states enacted 33 different laws that restrict voting rights. These laws make voting by mail more difficult, shorten early voting, and reduce the number of polling places. These hurdles specifically target working people, voters of color, and voters with disabilities. The Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act are the desperately needed federal responses to the attacks on voting rights happening in state legislatures all across the country. These pieces of legislation would protect the right of every American to cast our vote and have that vote counted.

There’s just one problem: These bills are stalled in the Senate because of the filibuster. We cannot afford to let voting rights fall victim to this procedural hurdle conceived generations ago. Progress on reforming the filibuster would also help open the door to the rest of our democracy and investment agenda: good union jobs, the right to organize, and more. We call on the Senate to sideline the filibuster and pass voting rights legislation.
